Constitution

RGU:Union, while partly funded by the University, is an autonomous organisation with its own rules and regulations. These are set out in the Students’ Association’s Constitution and defines who is allowed to be a member of the Union, what kind of activities the Union can carry out, who is responsible for the management of the Union, what some of these responsibilities are and so on.

The Constitution is an official legal document that sets out the fundamentals of how your Union operates. It’s a cross between a roadmap and a bible, and if you can understand the constitution, you understand how the Union works. Don’t forget – it was students who wrote the Constitution and students who voted it in! It is also students, and only students, who have the power to change it. Changes can be made at any Annual General Meeting provided that the Executive Committee is informed over 2 weeks prior to the AGM. For more information on how the Constitution can be changed email president@rguunion.co.uk

The Students’ Union is a democratic organisation, led by elected officers and student run committees, responsible for deciding what the Union should be doing and for representing the interests of its members to the University and externally. The constitution provides a framework to ensure that all Officers and members of the Union are acting in accordance with the organisations aims and any legal requirements. However, the Constitution is only the groundwork – if you want the Union to take action on your behalf, you must attend the Annual General Meeting and voice your opinions! It’s your Union, so make sure you get what you want from it!
