NUS Scotland LGBT Campaign 2006
Donation NOT Discrimination
Following the success of last year’s NUS Scotland’s Please Give Blood Because We Can't campaign, NUS are having a UK-wide national day of action on Thursday 2nd November. On that day the Blood Transfusion Service will be at the Faculty of Health and Social Care at Garthdee. Students from throughout Aberdeen will be staging a local protest in aid of the campaign.
Currently any man who has ever had sex with another man is banned from giving blood for life. NUS believe this blanket ban is discriminative towards healthy gay and bisexual men.
To find out more information about the blood transfusion policies, the campaign or the local protest please contact RGU’s LGBT Society at lgbtsoc@rgunion.co.uk or log on to:
The current campaign by NUS Scotlands LGBT Devision was launched at RGU last year with a small protest at the Faculty of Health & Social Care. At the moment the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) have a policy thats states any man who has ever had sex with another man is banned from giving blood, for Life!
Organised by the RGU LGBT Society the event saw local and national press interest with visits from the National Press Association, NorthSound Radio, Grampian Television and the BBC. Interest in the campaign and the issue meant that the story was covered internationally, with articles appearing in papers as far as Washington DC.
Planned to coincide with a visit from the blood transfusion service the day saw a substatial increase in donations from students and staff.
As well as the on-campus campaign, students from RGU, Aberdeen Uni and Aberdeen college gathered outside the music hall on Thursday 9th March to protest the SNBTS policy while the blood transfusion service was taking donations in the music hall. With mixed reactions and support from passers by the volunteers managed to gather over 200 signatures in support of the campaign. As well as some unfortunate points of view :o(
Keep your eyes open for the launch of the online petition from the NUS so you and your friends can support the cause.
