Hockey
The touring Hockey squad in Newcastle.
RGU Mens Hockey Club
Without doubt, one of the most relaxed clubs at RGU. With all standards welcome, this relatively new club is gathering speed quickly. After a 2 year absence due to falling numbers and interest, RGU had once again a Men's Hockey Club for season 2004/2005. Reformed thanks to the efforts of Russell Heron and John Graham, the first season was always going to be tough. Yes it passed, every game was lost, but the nucleus was there for the current season. With Russell away in New York on placement, Fraser Cord took over as President with John Graham continuing as Captain.
A good intake of freshers has led the club to huge success in comparison to last year. Having won all games this season, they sit top of BUSA 3A waiting to hear the draw for the British Trophy. The club train on Mondays between 6 and 7:30pm on the water-based astroturf at Chris Anderson Stadium, Linksfield Road. We have a very able coach in Dom Cruickshanks who helps train the squad and has moulded the team with a winning mentality. With a membership of over 20 guys, it makes team selection tough but every player has had game time. We believe every player deserves their chance!
Off the pitch, the team are very close and often socialize together. Its a great way to meet new people as the men and ladies often arrange events together. We have an annual Christmas dinner where over 50 players from both clubs attended. The other success was a recent weekend in Newcastle where 30 players went down to represent RGU against Newcastle in an inter-university challenge. We played Mens, Womans and mixed matches on our tour. Great times were had by all.
If you are interested in playing, we welcome any new members with open arms.
