RGU MENS HOCKEY vs ABERDEEN UNI 3rds
Match Report 23/11/05
RGU hit the road for the first time this season. It wasnt a long trip, just another mile down King st from home, to Keith Park, where they faced Aberdeen Uni for the second time this season. After a 3-1 win over them on the opening day, RGU looked to maintain their 100% start to the season with another victory. The pitch was frosty, but after a brief debate, the pitch was deemed playable and so the match began as planned.
Both teams started sluggishly with most of the play in the centre of the pitch. Aberdeen had the first chance, but knocked it wide. RGU began to press, slowly pushing Aberdeen back. After a couple of half chances, the goal came. The ball broke in midfield to Graham Lister who drove forward and sent a square pass across goal for Alan Grigor to sweep the ball in. It was easily the best move of the game. The half ended with RGU still on the attack. Alex West was controlling the game in the midfield with Graham Lister, Mike Rennie and Alan Grigor creating opportunities to score. It was 1-0 RGU at half time.
Aberdeen came out looking lively after the break. Andy Beattie and Jerome Anglin had to be alert to break up their attacks, and Goal Keeper Dave Bruce made a couple of key saves. Once the storm was weathered, RGU went looking for the killer second goal. Chances came but were not converted. The second goal eventually came after a shambolic short corner. Fraser Cord’s stopping was mince, the ball was anything but under control. The RGU attack tried to keep the chance alive. Eventually, good work From Graham Lister and Andy Beattie got the Ball to Mike Rennie to smash low into the net. It was a deserved goal. That took the wind out of Aberdeen and the game came to a quiet end. It finished 2-0 to RGU. Alex West was voted Man of the Match by the team.
