RGU Mens Hockey vs Stirling Uni 2nds
Match Report 30/11/05
After the away leg was rearranged from early October, RGU met Stirling for the first time this season at Chris Anderson Stadium. RGU, with their 100% record still in tact, would hope for a comfortable win against the side second bottom in their league. It didnt turn out that way!
It took RGU less than one minute to open the scoring. Top scorer Graham Lister broke in from the right and drilled a shot through the Stirling Goalkeeper for his 5th goal in 5 games. It was an instant confidence booster and some fine attacking play followed. Goal number 2 came after 9 minutes. This time Graham Lister turned provider, breaking down the right and his square ball across the D found Fraser Cord to sweep in his first goal of the season. More chances came, but were not converted. Then the jitters set in. Stirling began coming back into the game. They created a couple of openings before scoring with a low shot. Then the unthinkable happened, they scored again. Hardly in the match as an attacking force but clinical in front of goal. A goal mouth scramble ended up with a powerful drive hitting the net. It was 2-2 at half time.
RGU regained their focus after half time. They laid siege to Stirling’s goal. 10 minutes of intense pressure brought no reward. It looked like Stirling had weathered the storm. Then the two Fraser’s combined. Fraser Durno lashed a ball into the D, Fraser Cord deflected it towards goal. It hit keeper, post, then keeper again and landed on the goal line. Mike Strachan did the rest. RGU pressed, Alan Grigor missed a couple of chances before netting at the back post making it 4-2 RGU. Stirling rallied again, and nicked another goal. The nerves began to set in. They were eased when the Stirling Right back was sin-binned for illegal use of his stick. This advantage allowed livewire Martin Ronald to add number 5 after a goalmouth scramble. Andy Edwards then lashed home minutes later with a back stick shot after good work by Ronald. That took the wind out of Stirling. The game finished 6-3 to RGU. Martin Ronald was voted Man of the Match. He was always a threat with his pace and determination.
