RGU Mens Hockey Vs Dundee Uni 2nds
Match Report 7/12/05
RGU played their first match outside Aberdeen this season, travelling to Dundee to face Dundee Uni, who were top of the league. It was a close game in Aberdeen with RGU wining 3-2 thanks to two late goals. Captain John Graham returned after his placement, but as agreed Jerome Anglin kept the armband until after christmas.
On a freezing day in Dundee, it was the home team who adapted quickest to the conditions of a frozen pitch, barely passed playable by the ground staff. They had concerted pressure for the first 5mins, RGU looking sluggish after the bus trip. Then a counter attack won RGU a short corner. The usual team of Alex West pushing, Mike Strachan stopping and Graham Lister striking did the trick with Lister scoring his 6th goal in 6 games. Dundee rallied and again pinned RGU back. They were exerting pressure without creating any clear chances. Another counter attack from RGU won a second short corner. The personnel involved had changed but the outcome was the same. This time Fraser Cord stopped for John Graham to strike, 2-0 RGU. It was a game of few chances, and a couple of John Graham runs was the only other highlight of a rather dull 1st half.
The second half began with Dundee pressing, but Dave Bruce in goal had hardly anything to do. Little was happening up the other end either until RGU won a third short corner. Alex West’s push was slightly wide, but Mike Strachan managed to get shot off. The Rebound fell to John Graham to flick high into the goal for his second of the game. As Dundee pressed, space was left in behind, and Martin Ronald’s pace was causing problems. He was eventually rewarded by deflecting a John Graham hit past the Keeper. That was the killer blow, and enabled the midfield trio of Alex West, Graham Lister and John Graham to take a rest as the job was done. Final score 4-0 RGU. Martin Ronald was voted man of the match for the second week in a row. He always looked dangerous when he had the ball and went running at defenders.
