The Rifle Club is not how most people imagine it. We are not a group of camouflage wearing maniacs who run around in fields, we will leave that to the paintballers.

Small-Bore Rifle Shooting is a recognised Olympic and Commonwealth sport and is certainly one of the most rewarding sports around. Huge grins are a regular occurrence as personal bests are often broken.

We usually meet twice weekly at Denwood range which is by far the best shooting facilities available to a university in Scotland. We train along side Aberdeen University's rifle club which means lots of healthy competition and the opportunity for lots of socialising. Throughout the first semester apart from training we regularly compete in postal leagues at local, regional and national levels.

All the training becomes useful when we start competing in SUSF 25m Indoor competitions against other Scottish universities either on home turf or at the hosting university's range. This is a great opportunity to socialise with fellow sportsfolk and usually enjoy a few post-shooting drinks!

Once the winter months are over we start training to shoot outdoors at the longer distances of 50m and 100yrds. The outdoor season has two major events starting with SUSF Outdoor annually hosted at Denwood which is another opportunity for the Scottish Unis to meet up, socialise and compete against each other. Last year RGU managed for the first time to be placed in the top 3 for the team competitions and the Captain, Emma, won the individual competition.

The season culminates with the BUSA outdoor competition hosted in Appleton, Englandshire, where all the British universities meet up and shoot against each other in a bid to win the most points for their university. BUSA last year was a great event for RGU with captain, Emma, again proving her metal and winning the event against another 130 competitors with the rest of the team being placed highly in the overall competition.

So if you think you have what it takes to be the next eagled eyed RGU marksman, give it a try!
