Promoting cultural diversity at RGU
The world we live in is evolving; institutions need people who can engineer change. I am an advocate of positive change! I strongly believe in advocating for change and helping people with the knowledge, skills, experience and resources to maximize their potentials. I am a global citizen that is why I am keen on being part of the Union as the International student Officer.
Studying abroad is more than just acquiring a University Degree; it creates a rich pot of experience for the student. The question now is how can international student s maximize their study experience at RGU?
I will be focusing a lot on cultural diversity for international students and how they can maximize their study experience by learning skills that makes them global citizens;
- I am looking at introducing cross-cultural engagements among students, where students can learn the unique cultures of students from other countries and also get a true feel of the Scottish people and their way of life.
- I will organize programmes that aim to build intercultural competence; I hope to introduce the Miss international and Mr. Diversity contest among students
- Celebrating National days of various countries and liaising with the student society for the different countries for the events to commemorate their National day
- I will also organize programmes in the form of fashion parade/exhibition and Food competition for different Nationalities and also ensure that the Union Website give students recipe to prepare Scottish meals and intercontinental dishes
- I hope to create avenues for students to learn other languages; I will facilitate language learning tutorials that we can upload on the union website so that students can be multilingual
- Organise forum that promotes global citizenship in the form of debates and talks; encouraging students to be informed and responsible global citizens by being actively involved in international issues as well as improve student skills to be employable
- Trust building and positive thinking; we need to help students have a truly international outlook and ability to build lasting relationships with people from different backgrounds, nationalities and creeds. The fear of assumed racial discrimination need to be looked into so that international students can believe in themselves and relate with students and staffs without prejudice. I hope to achieve this by organizing international students’ assembly from time to time as the orientation week is never enough to build trust, it should be a continuous process!
