Where do the opportunities at rgu:union Volunteering come from?
rgu:union Volunteering hosts opportunities from any local organisation that conforms to our strict code of practice, ensuring at all times both your health & safety and the quality of the volunteering opportunity. Internal university groups may also advertise with rgu:union Volunteering.
Why use RGU: UNION Volunteering?
rgu:union Volunteering matches your skills and interests with opportunities that exist in the local area, ensuring that all the great opportunities that you might otherwise miss are at your fingertips.
Can I get recognition for volunteering I am already doing?
Yes you can. If you are currently volunteering as a committee member of a Sports Club or Society or as School or Class Rep or even an Elected Union Officer you can get recognition for all your effort. Or if you are volunteering with a University project such as the Careers Ambassadors, Practice Learning Environment, Alumni, and RGU: Sport. You can usually back date volunteering hours.
How much time will I need to give?
Some volunteering requires a regular weekly commitment, others only a few hours a month. Opportunities you find at rgu:union Volunteering should make it clear how much time is required. There is something to suit everyone.
How long will I have to commit for?
As a volunteer you are free to leave whenever you like. However if things don't work out or your circumstances change it's good to talk it through with the person in charge and give them some notice if possible.
What skills will I need?
That depends on the opportunity. Many don't require any particular skills, while others might make use of specific training, for example in web design.
What can I expect as a volunteer?
Once you start volunteering you can expect: most organisations payment of out-of-pocket expenses; a clear idea of what your role will be; and appropriate training and support.
I am not a British National, can I volunteer in the UK?
There are no restrictions on volunteering by EU nationals. The same goes for nationals Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein. People with refugee status (or who have exceptional leave to remain) and their family members can volunteer. Asylum seekers and their family members may volunteer - including whilst they are appealing against a decision to refuse them asylum. You can find the latest information about volunteering by non-EU nationals, and more details about volunteering by refugees and asylum seekers at www.volunteering.org.uk.
Can I volunteer if I have a disability?
Yes. There are disabled volunteers in all kinds of roles. If you have particular concern, please contact us.
When can I start getting involved?
As soon as you register your details you can start applying for opportunities.
Who can I talk to if I have a question/problem?
If you aren't clear about anything, or feel in any way uncomfortable about what you have been asked to do don't be afraid to call us to chat.
