What is Torcher Parade?
The Torcher Parade is the largest student torch lit parade in Europe and is one of the oldest student events in Aberdeen. This year will be the 127th Parade, which brings together students from Robert Gordon University, University of Aberdeen and North East Scotland College for a major fundraising parade. The purpose of the event is to raise money for local charities through a unique, student-run parade!
From 6:00pm on Saturday 21st October 2017, students shall parade down Union Street in fancy-dress, with collection buckets to raise money from local residents and children. The parade will be led by a procession of lit torches, and followed by three decorated lorries from the three education institutes in Aberdeen. The parade will begin at 6:00pm from Albyn Place and will continue down Union Street and should last roughly thirty minutes
Can I get involved?
Yes! The RGU stall is looking for as many volunteers as possible! We need students to dress up as 'water-themed' characters, and help us collect money as part of the parade! On Saturday 21st October, we need a group of students from 9am to help build our float, with decorations, painting, and more. Then, at 5:15pm, all those taking part in the parade will meet at Albyn Place to collect buckets, and be prepared for the event. Once the parade starts, the torchers will be lit, and the floats will proceed down Union Street and student volunteers shall entertain the crowds and collect money. We encourage all societies, sports clubs and student groups to get involved and participate in the event.
What would I have to do?
- Get a costume. Themed around water, perhaps think the Little Mermaid, Pirates, Moana, Finding Nemo, Atlantis, Beachwear, Lifeguards e.t.c or any other fun costume. Bring our your Halloween outfit early! Remember to keep it warm though, it will be cold at night!
- Get a group of friends together and come along to take part in the parade!
- Help build the RGU stall. Find materials, do some painting, come along from 9am to Loch Street to help build the truck.
- Come to Albyn Place at 5:15pm on Saturday 21st October 2017 to collect your bucket
- Walk down Union Street and collect money
Why should I volunteer?
Torcher Parade is one of Aberdeen's oldest events, and being part of it is an incredibly fun and exciting thing to do. How often do you get to parade down the city centre!? As a volunteer, you will only need to give up a few hours of your time, and you can claim volunteering hours for taking part! We are also giving free entry to Insitute for that Saturday night for all those who participate in the parade. You will also be helping to raise funds for dozens of local charities, meet new people from other educational establishments and be a part of a parade that has been around for hundreds of years. The main reason, is that it is incredibly fun!
How do I get involved?
If you are interested in participating in the parade, all you have to do is to join the Facebook Group, e-mail Martin, your Vice President of Events and come along on Saturday 21st October!
