On the 9th of April 2021, the nation was shocked by the death of the Duke of Edinburgh at the age of 99. It has devastated all of his relatives and those who idolised him around the world. This article will be dedicated to Prince Philip and all of the amazing things he had achieved in his long life.

Buckingham Palace issued a statement which said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”

Prince Philip’s health was shown in the media to be deteriorating in recent times after spending a month in hospital earlier this year. He also previously stepped down from official royal duties in May 2017. In the history of the British monarchy, Prince Philip was the longest serving consort to any King or Queen. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip had been married for 73 years after celebrating their wedding anniversary in November 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic.

More importantly, we will look back at some of the highlights of the Prince’s life.

He was born in 1921 on the small island of Corfu, near mainland Greece. After leaving Greece, Prince Philip travelled to many countries in order to find a place to call home after his father was banished from his home country of Greece. His social class transformed over a decade from a Greek prince to a homeless child with nothing. Eventually, he found the United Kingdom - where he was sent to boarding school. He was a student at Gordonstoun - a private school in the North of Scotland. Gordonstoun was where he learned to be brave and independent because he knew he had to possess those qualities for his future. These qualities of Prince Philip’s allowed him to be one of the youngest first lieutenants to go into the Royal Navy.

Prince Philip was a vital reason as to how Britain became a more developed country by encouraging innovation and creativity in scientific methods. He also encouraged a period of modern thinking. As a result, the United Kingdom became economically better off because of the encouragement that Prince Philip offered the country. When consumerism became more prominent, Prince Philip would use his position to warn people about the impacts of their increasing use on the environment - including the mention of the ‘greenhouse effect’ in 1982.

He was an inspiration to many across the world for a variety of reasons. These reasons could be for the Prince being in the Royal Navy, the British Army and the Royal Air Force - fighting for the country he loves. He fought for Britain in World War II which is heroic in itself.
Additionally, he created the much-beloved Duke of Edinburgh Award to recognise young people’s merits to improve themselves.
We will always remember him for his actions and his values that will be carried on for the future generations.
