RGU:VConnect

RGU:V-Connect is an extension of the volunteering opportunities available through RGU:Union Volunteering, in a new partnership with Aberdeen City Council's Self Directed Support Team and the support service, I-Connect.

RGU:V-Connect will provide a valuable opportunity to get out into the community and make a real difference in enhancing the often isolated lives that many social care users in the city lead. We aim to promote real and meaningful friendships between our student volunteers and the people who we support.

No previous experience is required. Just tell us your particular hobbies, skills and interests that you are willing to share, and what time you are able to commit. RGU:V-Connect are looking at a range of flexible options, so whether you can offer a regular weekly commitment, or a few hours a month please let us know. We will then look to match you with someone looking for similar opportunities, in order to help improve their access to the community and enhance their experience of any shared activities.

If you would be interested in finding out more about RGU:V-Connect then pop into the Union office on University St and speak to Stevie Kearney, our Student Development & Volunteering Co-ordinator.

RGU:V-Connect Opportunities

I-Connect are looking for the following:

- One or two people to help running a social group for people with disabilities. It’d be meetings at the pub or going to the cinema. Some people with disabilities have an Access Card, insuring the person going with them goes for free so that would be a nice perk. It would be good for a social care student maybe?

- Volunteers to help our volunteers with learning disabilities to run their project. The project consists of making videos for our website, having a newsletter, writing blogs…

- People just to cover I-Connect and keep it open as we have events and meetings to go to. They would assist and help clients with their queries too.

The Phoenix Club

The club is a social group for people with learning disabilities which meets at Inchgarth Community Centre on Mondays. The Coordinator [Pam Gallant] is retiring and is looking for someone to take her place to continue the excellent work which has been built up. This could be one individual or a team, depending on skills and availability.

It’s a very important group to people – a lot of people with disabilities are going there. It would be a shame to see it end because there’s no replacement, so any input from RGU students to help save a vital resource in the local community would be great.
