ROSS LEVEN

I’m Ross Leven, a final-year International Business Management Student, running for the positions of President (Communication and Democracy) and Undergraduate Governor.

My aim is to continue the great work that has taken place over the past few years, supporting the student groups and societies, engaging with more students and working for students to shape the future strategy of the Students’ Union. I have the experience and skills required to work with students and staff to make the changes that benefit every student at RGU. If I am elected, I will focus on the following objectives:

Manifesto objectives:

Student Social Space & Bar

  • Students need their own space, outside of the University’s canteens and study spaces. I will continue to work to ensure that this becomes a reality.

24-hour Library and Study Space

  • The current study space trial has worked well, and students want access to the Library outside the university’s opening hours. I will ensure that this continues and that students can access RGU’s study spaces at all times.

Free Park & Ride Facilities for Students

  • Car parking is a massive issue at RGU, there are not enough spaces for everyone that wants one. Additionally, building more spaces on or near campus is not a viable option, but Aberdeen does have park and ride facilities and we need to look at these alternatives.

Increase Student Engagement Across Schools

  • We need to ensure that the Union works with all students across campus, no matter what school or building you are in. I will ensure that Union information is displayed across all buildings on campus and that more is done to engage these schools.

Improve Support for Distance and Online Learners

  • Online and distance learners are a huge part of the RGU community, and we need to engage more with these students. I will ensure that your views are considered in everything that the Union does.

Improve Bus Stop Accessibility for Students on Campus

  • This is an issue that was highlighted at the Union’s AGM. Specifically looking at the difficulty of people in wheelchairs or that use a cane when they try to get by the bus stop queues outside the IGB. This needs to be sorted and I will work with University management and Estates to find a workable solution.

Ross’ experience:

Current Vice President (Education) at RGU:Union

  • Increased the number of Reps that were appointed and trained
  • Launched the Chat Comment Change campaign to increase feedback from students
  • Sat on RGU's Academic Council and stood up for students in key discussions
  • Lead the response to breaches of the 20-day feedback policy by schools, resulting in reviews by School & University Management as well as a commitment that this wouldn't happen in future years
  • Worked with the Advice and Support Coordinator to create a support services booklet, detailing all the support services available to students - which will be released for Freshers' 2020
  • Worked with DELTA on the Student Facing Services Review.
  • Developed successful working relationships with RGU Staff
  • Successfully campaigned for students and stood up to the University when required

Societies and Student Groups

  • Successfully Launched DofE Student Group
  • Involved in multiple societies and committee positions

Driven and Committed

  • Year’s Industry Experience working in Corporate Communication
  • Nominated by the Union's staff for NUS Scotland Student of the Year 2020
