STEVIE SMITH

My name is Stevie Smith and this year, I am standing for the roll of Student Union Elected Trustee. In this roll my aim is to use my influence to

I am a mature media student from Aberdeen, currently in my 3rd year a Media Studies degree at RGU. I am resident in the local area of Ruthrieston which allows me a unique view on how the University, both directly and indirectly effects its locality.

Prior to my return to Education, I spent my time working in Local Government Finance before working for a Large mobile company in a managerial and training role. These varied experiences provide me a strong base for tackling issues in a way which brings them to a fair and democratic conclusion.

If elected, I will aim to ensure that RGU, and the Union strengthen our bonds with the residents of the areas which are connected to the school so that we can try and resolve long term issues with residents and local leaders.

If elected, I will aim to promote equality and inclusion throughout everything the Union does when working for Students. In 2018, everyone should be able to better themselves.  No student should every be treated any different because of Race, Religion, gender choice, class, and ability level.

If elected as one of the Trustee, will ensure The Union’s five core strategic objective, including, Your Voice, Your Community and Your Wellbeing, are protected by championing fairness, accountability, transparency, and mutual understanding within the board. I Will help to contribute towards the strategic priority of the union.

I will lobby for more Social Space. In Aberdeen’s past, the Universities of Aberdeen had some of the best student union facilities in the UK.

Over the years, the Union buildings in Aberdeen have been closed and cut down to the point we are at today, where we have now inherited a Union which crying out for more social spaced.

It makes me sad that the Union facilities I was awarded when I was a young student, in Aberdeen, have all been closed, and instead we have been left with a very limited, small space.

If elected, I will work closely with the Union and again, move a motion for the board to lobby for a genuine “Student Union” which could include its own licenced preemies and social spaces that all current and future students can call their own.
