Candidate for the position of Vice President (International)

MOHTASHIM IQBAL E WARIS

What relevant experience, skills and qualities do you have that make you a strong candidate for this elected position?

I have an energetic and motivated personality, and I have participated in many extracurricular activities during my college and university years. I have been acting as a house captain during my college time and leading the whole house under 2 deputy house captains. I have also organized college-level games during my 2 years of tenure and won badminton and table tennis runner-up prizes at the college level. My college also won the title of runner-up at the inter-college level during my tenure. My primary objective is to support international students in navigating their academic journey and optimizing their university experience. I am dedicated to this goal by offering comprehensive assistance, directing students to available resources, and ensuring they are informed about cost-effective options. As your Vice President of International, I pledge to champion these initiatives and advocate for the diverse needs of our international student community.

Priority Aim 1

My first aim is to provide ease and guidance to all international students in all the necessary activities, including:
1) How to do physical enrollment
2) How to register with their local GP
3) How can they open their bank accounts and transfer their money from their home country
4) How can they apply for a council tax exemption form
5) Affordable accommodation options
I did a lot of research, did everything by myself, and even helped a lot of international students. I'm going to make a booklet where they can all get all the information.

Priority Aim 2

My second priority goal is to inform all the international students about all the available resources they can avail of within the university. University offerings and facilities they can avail of, like free gym, swimming, and classes, and how they can register with them. Many of the international students won't be able to reach the university in the welcome week due to visa delays or personal reasons.

Priority Aim 3

I am committed to cultivating a more inclusive campus atmosphere by organizing diverse cultural events. These events not only make individuals feel valued and energized but also foster connections and enrich the overall student experience. I would also like to guide international students on how they can hunt for part-time jobs to achieve their basic needs during their studies at RGU. As your Vice President of International, I pledge to champion these initiatives and advocate for the diverse needs of our international student community.

What is the biggest issue currently facing RGU students, and how will you work with the rest of the Student Presidents and Vice Presidents to tackle this?

My first motive is the most important and challenging issue that I have encountered with many international students. Even in our January intake, I have helped many students perform these activities, and recently, I met a girl who lives in my accommodation who had not registered with the local GP and was unaware of the local GP location. So the most important thing that I can recommend is my first goal.
