MIRIAM SAMUELS

Hi everyone! My name is Miriam Samuels and I am running to be elected VP of Sport.

You might recognise me as the short gal from Purple Wednesdays: Episode 3 that’s STILL playing across all the uni screens, but when I’m not telling Gav off for being rude, I’m in my 4th year studying Pharmacy and have just started my 3rd term as president of the university volleyball club. Since I joined, I have been an active member of the team, participating in social and fundraising events and playing in both recreational local league games and competitive BUCS matches.

I have been an active member of the Sport’s Forum since taking up the post as club president and have never been afraid to stimulate a debate or suggest ideas on how sport can improve at RGU.

My recent appointment to the Sport and Physical Activity Team has already given me an insight into the role as I strive to use what I have learned and developed in my time at RGUVC and on SPAT and apply it across the board so that all clubs can reach their full potential.

My first aim for the coming year is to support Gav in getting as many people involved in sport as possible and I plan to do this by;

  1. Creating a social Granite City Challenge where recreational members of all clubs participate, intensifying the rivalry with AU,
  2. Piloting a course-wide sports day that can then be replicated in future across all faculties and,
  3. Encouraging volunteering and participation with Street Sport so that those involved in sport can represent the university on a voluntary basis, outside of competition

Club fundraising is something that RGUSport has been looking to improve upon and I want to promote this surge so that all clubs – no matter the size – see the benefits from the ‘big pot’. By making the most of the community bond between all the clubs, I hope to boost inclusive all club fundraisers that smash all targets set at the start of the year. Having already been a part of the success of this year’s Oktoberfest, I plan to use this platform to continue the collaborative spirit and make joint club fundraisers THE go-to social events throughout the year.

Lastly, I hope that all clubs achieve the development they seek out at the start of the year. Student coaching and refereeing qualifications are the perfect way of giving back to your club and by doing so, saves being out of pocket when officials are needed for matches. I hope that RGUSport can become a recognised host for these accredited events and that clubs reap the benefits of having members qualified on and off the field. Not only can this positively influence training sessions and matches, but personal development can also be attributed to your time as part of RGUSport.

If any of this tickles your fancy, please make sure you VOTE for me when voting opens on Monday 12th November.
